Caulking: Tips and Tricks

08 Jul Caulking: Tips and Tricks

Caulking is one of those building materials that’s simple enough for almost anyone to work with. And while caulking isn’t the most glamorous or enjoyable weekend projects, it is important that it occasionally get replaced, because not only does it provide a seamless transition between countertops and vanities, sinks and back splashes, bathtubs and surrounds, etc., it prevents water from travelling into spaces where it could cause mold and mildew damage. If you notice that your caulking is getting moldy or that it’s damaged or beginning to peel away, here are a few tips and tricks to removing it and then replacing it, correctly.

How to Remove Caulking Properly

Use a caulking removal tool or a utility knife (If you use a utility knife to remove caulking be careful that you don’t cut into the wall or appliance behind the caulking) to remove old caulking. Begin at the topmost or bottommost edge of the old caulking and work your way along the inner seam. When you have removed the caulking from the inside edge, try to pull the caulking downward in long strips. Likely the caulking will break apart in small increments—although if you’re really, really lucky it will come away in long strips. The one thing to remember is to clean away all the caulking; if the caulking breaks apart into fragments, clean these away with a damp rag.

Reapply Caulking

Properly applying caulking is simple. Place the caulking within the caulking gun and cut the tip at an angle. One thing to remember is to cut open the tip of the caulking only as wide as the bead you intend to place. As you place the caulking along the seam, slowly squeeze the trigger of the caulking gun and apply a bead of caulking in a smooth unbroken bead. Use a caulking tool or a wet towel or your wet finger to flatten the bead of caulking along the seam. If you use your finger, it may take several passes to smooth out the bead and remove the excess. The one tip and trick to always remember is to only apply as much caulking as you can easily apply and then smooth out in a few minutes. You might only feel comfortable working in small increments and that’s totally fine.
